ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Wednesday signed free agent defensive end DeMarcus Ware to a three-year contract, Executive Vice President of Football Operations/General Manager John Elway announced.
Ware (6-4, 258 pounds) is a 10th year player and seven-time Pro Bowler who started 140-of-141 regular-season games played during his first nine NFL seasons with Dallas, totaling 576 tackles (445 solo), 117 sacks (747 yds.), two interceptions (41 yds.), 23 passes defensed, 32 forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries, according to press box totals. He also owns 16 tackles (10 solo), four sacks (26 yds.) and one forced fumble in four playoff starts.
He has accumulated seven double-digit sack totals during his nine seasons and owns the second most sacks in the NFL since he entered the league in 2005 as a first-round selection (11th overall) by the Cowboys from Troy University.
The Cowboys’ franchise sack leader, Ware’s 117 quarterback takedowns currently rank 18th all-time in league history. His 0.83 career sacks per game trail only Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end Reggie White (0.85/game) among players appearing in at least 50 games.
His career-high 20 sacks in 2008 are tied for the eighth most all-time for a single season. That year, he became the first player since at least 1994 to post 15 sacks, 25 tackles for a loss and five forced fumbles in a single season (Broncos linebacker Von Miller became the second player to accomplish that feat in 2012).
Ware has been named an All-Pro selection by the Associated Press following seven of his nine seasons in the NFL (first team, 2007-09, ’11; second team, 2006, ’10, ’12) in addition to being selected as a member of the 2000s NFL All-Decade Team.
An all-conference performer at Troy, Ware finished his collegiate career with 201 tackles, 27.5 sacks, 58 tackles for a loss and nine forced fumbles. He ended his senior season in 2007 by leading the Trojans to their first-ever bowl appearance and earning Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Ware was a two-year letterman at Auburn (Ala.) High School, where he played linebacker and wide receiver. He was born on July 31, 1982.
