Please Tell Me I'm Right on a Thursday!

PLEASE TELL ME I'M RIGHT WITH CHARLES HARRINGTON ELSTER!  He's on at 3, you know what to do.  Find out more or email Charles directly by clicking this link

I'VE GOT VACATION ON MY MIND And I'd love to know what your DREAM vacation is?  Where would you go if money were no object?  I've got a list a mile long.

THIS PIECE EXPLAINS WHY AND HOW TRUMP'S NATO STANCE IS DEAD ON And it's exclusively about the rather small nation of Denmark.  Yes, it's long.  But it will help you understand why Trump's tough talk is utterly and completely necessary.  It also explains how Denmark refuses to raise it's defense spending because of it's huge welfare state.  This is about Denmark, but I'm guessing that the same rationale exists in many other NATO nations.  This part is really telling (emphasis mine):

Jens Ringsmose of the Royal Danish Defence College has argued that balance of threat theory and the economic theory of alliances capture the reasons why small states generally ally with a larger power — for protection and to free ride on security guarantees — but not why small states maintain, increase, or decrease their defense efforts. Small states react to threats of abandonment from their allies rather than changes in perceived threat from their adversaries, he argues, because larger alliance partners can reallocate their efforts to reduce the security enjoyed by the smaller ally without eviscerating the alliance.

They don't view their own defense as a priority because they know we've got them.  They then re allocate resources for their welfare state.  At least Denmark DOES step up when it comes to troops and participation in Joint Operations, but they are about to raise their defense spending to a whopping 1.3 % of GDP, which is exactly how much it was in 2013.  They've actually CUT defense spending.  Also, guess who said this:

[T]he blunt reality is that there will be dwindling appetite and patience in the U.S. Congress — and in the American body politic writ large — to expend increasingly precious funds on behalf of nations that are apparently unwilling to devote the necessary resources or make the necessary changes to be serious and capable partners in their own defense

Trump?  No.  Jim Mattis?  No.  John Bolton?  No.  It was Obama Secretary of Defense in 2011.  And yet, Denmark CUT spending after that.  I urge you to read the whole thing, you will be a LOT smarter for it.

SO THIS GUY...UH...WELL HE...UH...YOU SHOULD JUST READ THIS Because I'm simply not sure how describe what this guy has done to himself.

NOW BACON CAN ACTUALLY MAKE YOU CRAZY Part of me thinks this is part of a vast anti-meat conspiracy but I thought I'd share it with you too.  A new study links the consumption of cured meat containing nitrates to episodes of mania.  In rats the connection is pretty clear.  Most of our lunch meat and hot dogs and yes, bacon, contain nitrates.  But so do

  • Beets
  • Celery
  • Lettuce
  • Radishes and
  • Spinach

So there, science, I'll just cut radishes out of my diet to make room for bacon.

THIS COLUMN IS A PRETTY FULL-THROATED DEFENSE OF TRUMP And unlike some I've read that make very little sense, this one sort of crushes it.  Read it here

IF I LIVED IN SAN FRANCISCO I WOULD SUE IMMEDIATELY Because illegal immigrants are now registering to vote for a school election. And they are doing so "legally" under a San Francisco law.  If I were a citizen, I'd sue because my legal vote has been undermined by someone here illegally.  And I hope someone does so we can get some clarification about who can and who can't vote.

NEW JERSEY HAS AN OFFER YOU CAN'T REFUSE IF YOU'RE THIRSTY A New Jersey State Senator is lofting the idea of taxing tap water.  He calls it a "user fee" but it's a tax.  It's not getting a whole lot of support.

THIS VIDEO OF A DOG GREETING IT'S OWNER IS THE BEST THING ALL DAY But I can't embed the video here so you have to click this link to see it.  I promise it's worth it.

THIS IS A STUNNING REBUKE OF ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ.  BY A DEMOCRAT Let's just say former Senator and Vice Presidential Candidate for the Democratic Party Joe Lieberman is not a fan.  He wrote this scathing editorial urging people to vote for the primary defeated Rep. Joe Crowley to undo their mistake.

AS YOU KNOW, POLITICAL CORRECTNESS HAS REACHED INSANE LEVELS Ooops sorry if I made you feel inadequate if you DIDN'T know.  That's why Bath University in jolly (microaggression against depressed people!) old (ageist!) England (homogeneous, overly cisgendered oppressor nations!) has banned the use of the phrase "As you know".  Because apparently no one knows.
