REPUBLICANS PULL THE TRIGGER TO CONFIRM GORSUCH And I have to commend our own Democratic Senator Michael Bennet for voting AGAINST the Democrat filibuster that lead to the rules change. This is not unprecedented, as I found in four seconds on the internet. Although I do think that four days of actual debate not just one side yakking. Democrats were in control of the Senate 64 to 35 when LBJ nominated his friend Abe Fortas to the bench. There was bipartisan opposition to Fortas, and after four days of debate, there were not enough votes to get cloture and his nomination died. And please ignore the histrionics about how this is destroying our republic, because the Republicans will have to live under these SAME RULES someday when they are out of the majority. One big difference between this event and the Fortas case is that Fortas had some questions about some financial transactions that were dogging him. No one is making any such accusations about Fortas, simply that he doesn't abide by the liberal ideology they do. To be clear, the fact that the objections that lead to the nomination are STRICTLY POLITICAL is what's new here.
REMEMBER WHEN DEMOCRATS WERE AGAINST THE FILIBUSTER BEFORE THEY WERE FOR IT? Here is Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley in 2014 arguing for a simple majority for ALL judges. And here's Senator Elizabeth Warren urging her colleagues to use the nuclear option for judges back when her team was in charge.
AND THEN THERE WAS THAT TIME WHEN HARRY REID SAID THE DEMOCRATS WOULDN'T HESITATE TO USE THE NUCLEAR OPTION And that was just way back in October of LAST year when he was absolutely certain that Dems would take back the White House and Senate. My favorite quote is this one:
“I really do believe that I have set the Senate so when I leave, we’re going to be able to get judges done with a majority. It takes only a simple majority anymore. And, it’s clear to me that if the Republicans try to filibuster another circuit court judge, but especially a Supreme Court justice, I’ve told 'em how and I’ve done it, not just talking about it. I did it in changing the rules of the Senate. It’ll have to be done again,"
He sure did tell us, didn't he?? Sucks to have to live under the framework you created when you were in power, doesn't it Harry? Oh wait, he's gone. Heh.
