Iranian Hackers Who Targeted CDOT Indicted

The Colorado Department of Transportation was among the public agencies targeted by two Iranian hackers who were indicted by a federal grand jury in Washington on Wednesday.

Faramarz Shahi Savandi, 34 and Mohammed Mehdi Shah Mansouri, 27,  are charged with creating the "SamSam Ransomware " used in an international hacking and extortion scheme.

CDOT computers were attacked on Feb 19th  of this year. The data was encrypted and the hackers demanded a ransom payment in Bitcoin to undo their work.  CDOT refused to pay ransom and took 2,000 employee computers offline. An alternative  method was used to fix the computers at a cost estimated to be between a million to a million and a half dollars
