Broncos, Elway agree to 5-year contract

The following is a press release from the Denver Broncos regarding the re-signing of Executive Vice President of Football Operations/General Manager John Elway:

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Monday agreed to terms with Executive Vice President of Football Operations/General Manager John Elway on a new five-year contract through 2021, President and CEO Joe Ellis announced.

“We’re pleased to reach an agreement on a five-year contract with John to continue leading our football operations,” Ellis said. “During these last six seasons, John’s clearly established himself as one of the best general managers in all of sports. He’s demonstrated impressive football instincts, a strong business acumen and a consistent ability to build competitive teams.

“There’s no doubt John means a great deal to the Broncos, our fans and the entire community. It was important for us to reach this long-term agreement, and we’re all excited to now turn our full attention toward the 2017 season.”

Entering his seventh season as the Broncos’ lead football executive, Elway has overseen a team that has totaled the second-most overall wins (73) in the NFL since 2011 while capturing five AFC West Division titles and appearing in two Super Bowls. Additionally, Elway has helped the Broncos join the Patriots as the only NFL teams with at least nine wins (regular season and playoffs) in each of the last six years.

The highlight of Elway’s tenure as general manager was guiding the franchise to its third World Championship in 2015 with a 24-10 win against Carolina in Super Bowl 50.

“I appreciate the trust and confidence that Joe has shown in me,” Elway said. “Pat Bowlen has always put outstanding leadership in place, and I’m grateful for the support Joe gives us to compete for championships each and every year.

“This is a special place, and the Broncos are home to me. While there’s still a lot of work to be done, I’m excited about the future of this team and this organization.”

Elway’s tenure as an executive with the Broncos followed a 16-year Pro Football Hall of Fame career as a quarterback for the team from 1983-98 that included five Super Bowl appearances and two World Championships. In his 22 seasons with the franchise—16 as a player and six as an executive—the Broncos have appeared in seven Super Bowls, posting more championships (3) than losing seasons (2).

During his six seasons as an executive, Elway is the only general manager in the NFL during that span who has acquired future Pro Bowl players through the NFL Draft, street free agency, unrestricted free agency and college free agency. In all, he has signed or extended the contracts of 16 players who have combined for 32 Pro Bowl selections with the Broncos.
