Mars Rover "Perseverance" to Land on Red Planet

The Mars Rover "Perseverance" is set to land on the red planet today, and it has a connection to Denver. Lockheed Martin developed and built the aeroshell for the rover here in Denver.

Landing on Mars presents a big engineering challenge that involves withstanding intense pressure, high speeds and thousands of degrees of heat upon entry - much of which is tackled by an aeroshell that encapsulates the rover. If the aeroshell doesn’t do its job during descent, the mission is lost. Lockheed Martin has perfected the unique technology and the art of the aeroshell - building all 10 aeroshells for NASA’s Mars surface missions, including the one for Mars 2020.
