Blue wave sweeps over Colorado in midterm election

Jared Polis defeats Walker Stapleton in governor's race

Democrat candidates found gains over their Republican opponents during the 2018 midterm elections in Colorado.

Jared Polis defeated Walker Stapleton in the race for Governor and other major state offices followed suit, with Democrat Jena Griswold winning the Secretary of State race, Democrat Dave Young winning the race for State Treasurer and Democrat Phil Weiser took the race for Attorney General by a slim margin.

US Congressional races saw Democrats flip one seat as challenger Jason Crow defeated incumbent Mike Coffman in District 6, and Joe Neguse held on to the seat vacated by Polis in District 2. Nationally, Democrats flipped the majority of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Republican congressional incumbents Scott Tipton, Ken Buck and Doug Lamborn all held on to their respective seats, along with Democrat congressional incumbents Diana DeGette and Ed Perlmutter.

In the battle for Colorado Attorney General, it was Democrat Phil Weiser defeating Republican George Brauchler.

Despite Democrat candidates performing very well, left-leaning ballot measures such as Proposition 112 did not have the same measure of success.  Colorado voters rejected a pair of transportation bills, one which would have hiked the state sales tax and another which would have relied on bonds to fix roads.

With over 2.3M votes cast in Colorado for the midterm election, one of the most telling aspects of the night was the 760,000+ ballots returned by unaffiliated voters -- a number larger than that of both the affiliated party voters.
