3/6/24 Blog: A Skydiving Honor, Weather Wednesday, and A Health Report

WEATHER WEDNESDAY AT 12:30 Will we get snow or rain this weekend? Dave Fraser will let us know and answer your weather questions so get them ready.

HOW DO YOU HONOR TWO WORLD WAR II VETERANS? My guest at 1 today decided to honor them by jumping out of a plane on her 75th birthday. Paula Sarlls is a Marine ('67-'71), a Gold Star wife and Sister-in-law and she is spending her birthday and what would have been her 55th wedding anniversary doing a jump to honor to Iwo Jima veterans who are turning 99 and 100 this year. If you'd like to support her efforts she is asking for donations to the USMC Memorial Foundation which you can find by clicking here to make a donation.

REMEMBER THE PUSH TO BLOCK THE I-70 EXPANSION? The neighborhoods of Globeville and Elyria Swansea were unsuccessful in their attempts to do so, but they did manage to get a commitment from the state to do a health study on the impacts of the expansion on their neighborhood. The claims made back then were that the roadway created huge air quality issues that gave people asthma and breathing issues that led to bad health outcomes. Well the report is in and it shows quite the opposite. First off, air quality is commensurate with other Denver neighborhoods, as are rates of asthma and breathing issues like COPD. The real issue is obesity. Obesity is the underlying cause of the vast majority of health issues in the neighborhood, as we know fat people were more likely to die of Covid, which would explain the significant discrepancy in Covid deaths for the area. From the Denverite article:

Data on health outcomes show GES residents experience obesity and diabetes more often than their neighbors across town, but some numbers suggest that neighbors’ biggest concerns – cancer, asthma and cardiovascular conditions – may not be as bad as they think. For example, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pegs asthma prevalence around 10% in Denver and both neighborhoods.
But researchers dug in more, and found hospitalization numbers for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) show GES residents are still suffering more from these conditions.

Obesity makes most health conditions much worse. The study cites a lack of grocery stores within walking distance for most residents, which is a huge problem when getting access to good food, but as we've seen in other communities having access to healthy food does not always mean it will be bought and consumed. There is another report coming out early next year where the researchers will do a deep dive into how much air quality affects asthma in the neighborhood, but it's obvious to me the real problem is people in that neighborhood are too fat and no study will change that. I'm not sure how you get an entire community to change it's dietary habits but that's what we've got to do.

WHAT SHOULD BE ON OUR STATE OF THE UNION BINGO CARD? I asked this yesterday but today we're going to build it so we've got to get cracking. Think of the things that you are CERTAIN could happen tonight and we'll get this done.

JOIN ME TOMORROW NIGHT FOR THE KOAKAST ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE! I'll be in studio with my pal and fellow political nerd Kelly Maher to comment on and openly mock the State of the Union address. If you want to listen to the clean speech (and all of its incessant clapping) you can tune into Freedom 93.7 but if you want fun and frivolity join us on KOA's Facebook page instead.

TRUMP EASILY WINS SUPER TUESDAY And even though Nikki Haley squeaked out a win in Vermont she is expected to suspend her campaign today while not immediately endorsing Trump. Trump may need her endorsement, as many Haley voters told exit pollsters that they would not vote for Trump, although many of them are Democrats who crossed the aisle to vote for Haley so they don't matter in the General anyway. Noncommitted delegate had a decent showing against Biden at about 7% but it's not enough to get a delegate sent the DNC from Colorado. To be clear, I wasn't recommending that people vote for Noncommitted Delegate because of the war in Gaza, I wanted people to vote that way because Biden is a bad President. Now the path is cleared for the worst rematch in history and you can read more here but why.

LADIES AND GENTLEMAN, YOUR DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE He sees in command, doesn't he?

WHY DOES OUR MEDIA IGNORE DEMOCRAT STRIFE? I know, I know we all know the answer to that but this column by Cory Gaines shines a light on how significant the "look away" mentality of Colorado media really is. They love to cover anything Boebert related but can't find time to talk about how Elisabeth Epps has literally done the Legislative session FROM HER HOUSE.

DON'T DRINK AND DO EDIBLES AT HIGH ALTITUDE That is the lesson comedian Nick Swardson learned in Vail where he was literally pulled offstage and tickets were refunded after he bumbled his way through a horrible set. He admitted online after that he took edibles and drank in Vail and the combination was not a good one. You can watch the extremely unfunny video in this story and it's quite amazing. He's not the first comedian to overimbibe here and make an ass out of himself and probably won't be the last.

EDUCATION "EXPERTS" HAVE FAILED A GENERATION OF KIDS When the nifty new concept of "whole word" reading came out school districts couldn't wait to ditch the tried and true phonics based methods for this new shiny thing because education "experts" said it was the best. It's not the best, it's the worst, and now a whole generation of kids are hopelessly behind on their reading and this is a national tragedy. Alan Gottlieb writes about it here.

WHO IS JASON PALMER? At some point this will be an answer on Jeopardy, as the previously unknown Democrat beat an incumbent President in a primary. Sure it was in American Samoa but he did it.

IT'S INFLATION, STUPID Pundits on the left are bemoaning the fact that the economy is barreling along and yet Biden doesn't seem to be getting any of the credit. This story explains why. He's getting credit alright, but credit for the staggering inflation we've seen under his watch.

TWO MINUTE DRILL!

THE COLORADO SYMPHONY SCHEDULE IS OUT And they've got some really cool shows scheduled this year that go beyond classical music, you can see them here.

SWIFTIES WORRY ABOUT TAYLOR'S HEALTH As she has begun the second part of her grueling worldwide tour. She was seen coughing during a Singapore show and now the Swiftie's are concerned she's taken on too much. It is a very grueling schedule, I wouldn't want to do it.

HOW MUCH WOULD YOU PAY FOR A GREAT NIGHT'S SLEEP? New sleep cocoon hotels are banking on that being quite a bit. Their fancy sleep suites with very expensive beds are going for over a thousand bucks a night. Depending on where I was and how many time zones away I was I might consider it for one night just to get caught up. Read more here.

A GERMAN MAN HAS GOTTEN 217 COVID SHOTS And now scientists want to study him to see what the effects were. I think they need to study his brain and mental health more.

EPIC ANNOUNCES IT'S CRAZY EXPENSIVE SKI PASS PRICES And I don't even see how this is at all affordable for normal people but then again, I don't ski. The Epic pass is almost $1000 bucks. The Epics Locals pass is $731. That seems insane to me.

PLASTIC PRODUCERS LIED ABOUT RECYCLING And this is what I've been saying for like 20 years now. Plastic manufacturers have long known that recycling plastics on a broad scale is damn near impossible because of all the different plastic formulations but they kept telling us they could be recycled anyway. I know you're shocked just like I am.

PROGRESSIVES HATE THE NORMIES And this clip shows how out of touch this panel from MSNBC really is. They don't seem to know that a 14 year old girl in Virginia was just raped by an illegal immigrant while a woman jogging in Georgia was just killed by one too. But HAHAHA how funny are they!

WHAT'S THE BEST SUPERPOWER? Arod wants to know.

ARE YOU OVERPAYING YOUR TAXES? This article has good info on how to check on your withholding deductions to make sure you aren't paying too much or too little.
