Mon Blog: Happy Presidents Day, Erebody and a Local Chef Wins Chopped!

OSCAR PADILLA WON BIG ON THE FOOD NETWORK And as I love food of course I want to talk to the local chef about his experience on the show and more importantly about where I can eat his Argentinian inspired dishes. Find out more on his Instagram page here, but he joins me at 1 today to talk about the whole thing.

TWO ANNOYING THINGS HAPPENED THIS WEEKEND One was a family brought LITTLE KIDS to see Ant Man and those little kids were NOT ready to sit through a two hour movie BUT THE PARENTS DID NOT TAKE THEM OUT OF THE THEATER. Two, we went to a spectacular dinner with friends at a spectacular restaurant and the music was so loud we could hear nothing. We asked and they did turn it down, but why do restaurants think I am paying top dollar to listen to a forty year old Lionel Richie song? Seriously.

REMEMBER WHEN DEMOCRATS RAN ON TABOR REFUNDS? I knew they were lying and using OUR MONEY to buy votes from people who just don't pay attention and now we have proof. After running campaigns where they literally ran on saving us money, the Democrats have shot down a proposal to lower our income tax rate down to zero by using our TABOR refund to buy down the rate a little bit at a time. Ben Murrey from the Independence Institute writes about it here.

NOW WE HAVE DA'S DOING SOCIAL JUSTICE This is very bad news. Not that people are worried about racial disparities in policing, but that DAs are not committing to social justice action as a result. Crime stats nationwide show that even though African-Americans make up only 12.5% of the US population that are arrested for 26.2% of felony crimes. Why? Some may be bias, but those numbers are pretty high and certainly not a large percentage of them are racially motivated arrests. You'd have to believe that the entire justice system is stuck in a To Kill a Mockingbird style of racism to believe that bias is the issue here. And by the way, most of the victims in these crimes, especially murder, are likely black as well so we've got a ton of black people being victimized as well. So when I see this Axios study being put together by a group of DAs I am both heartened, as you can't manage what you don't measure, and disheartened because I already know what is going to happen here, and that is they will decide to treat black criminals differently so as to "juice" the numbers instead of asking why black people seem to be committing more crimes than white people proportionate to the population. Asking that second question is unpopular because then it leads to a discussion of the culture of violence that so many young black men seem to gravitate towards. There is no easy answer for that one. Instead, we already DAs virtue signaling like this from the underlying report:

1ST JUDICIAL DISTRICT ATTORNEY ALEXIS KING
“Colorado District Attorneys’ commitment to transparency and equity is demonstrated through the release of the recently completed disparities analysis, which allows us to move beyond data and into meaningful action. In the 1st Judicial District, we’re taking proactive steps to ensure our practices reflect our values by partnering with The Equity Project and Dr. Mosby-Tyler, to develop an equity lens for key decision points in case evaluation and resolution.”

I sure hope the black people who will be victimized by black criminals who will be coddled by this woman are happy she's proven her credentials as a ally with this statement. I'm sure they would prefer her virtue signaling to actually being safe.

WHY DO DEMOCRATS WANT TO KEEP MAKING CRIME EASIER IN COLORADO? We've got a bill in the Legislature that would prevent police from arresting people for petty crimes. This is another example of worrying about the people do the wrong thing while not thinking at all about people doing the RIGHT thing. Why should I have to live in a place where a scumbag can do whatever they want without worry while I have to worry about being harassed on the street because of them? Read more here, but this is another example of why elections matter.

WE ARE AMERICA'S CRIME CAPITAL NOW! We're #1! We are officially at the bottom of the Safest Neighborhoods list, which means we're #1 on the list of Unsafest Neighborhoods. Great job by our leadership in the city and the state in making this happen, they should be so proud!

THIS ACTUALLY MAKES ME FEEL BETTER ABOUT THE TSA So much of what the TSA does at the airport is performative. Testing by the agency once showed that a vast majority of weapons made it through the checkpoints without being seen. Those days may be over as a record 6,542 guns have been seized at checkpoints this past year and I'm okay with that. You can fly with a gun, but you have to go through a very cumbersome process and they must be checked. Otherwise you're a lawbreaker. Read more here.

THE HORRIFIC FAIR WORK WEEK BILL HAS BEEN PULLED and the authors of the bill say they will be making considerable amendments to the bill before introducing it again, but I hope this thing is dead for this session. Read about the controversial bill that would likely put small restaurants out of business and increase automation at others to put people out of work.

THE FUTURE OF FAST FOOD DOESN'T INCLUDE WORKERS And if you wonder what the unintended consequences for bills like the one above are, look no further than this article on the future of fast food and how we will get it. Note how much of this article does NOT include workers who make demands and call in sick. From the Wall Street Journal:

One such experiment is a location in suburban Fort Worth that opened last month. Its most distinctive feature is an automated delivery system for customers who order ahead on the McDonald’s app. When you pull up to the window in the “order ahead” lane, a conveyor delivers your food or beverage with help from a robotic arm that pushes the bag out to the waiting car. There is another drive-through lane for customers who want to order the traditional way.
Inside the boxy Texas restaurant, which is smaller than a conventional McDonald’s, there is also a pick-up room for delivery drivers as well as kiosks where customers can place their orders to go before retrieving them from a pick-up shelf. But there is no seating for customers, nor any playrooms for children.

No workers to clean a dining room, no workers to take orders in the dining room. A skeleton crew could run this easily, especially as robotic cooks take over. But keep passing job killing rules, Colorado.

STEAMBOAT SAYS COME ON UP A LITTLE LONGER As the resort has for the third time ever extended it's ski season. Getting over 300 inches of snow will do that for you. Read more here.

THERE WAS A RALLY FOR THE BLACK RANCHER COUPLE AT THE CAPITOL As their supporters showed up to support their claims of racist treatment at the hands of their neighbor and the El Paso County Sheriff's office. This article has given me more questions about the Mallery's behavior though. I clicked through and read some of the police reports that were released by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and they are not a good look for Nicole Mallery. According to the reports, there is body camera footage of these contacts she had with police and I'm interested to see those, as she is shown to be a liar in many of these incidences, including the one where she fired a shotgun at a process server and wanted him charged with attempted rape even though no such nonsense occurred and the process server has video evidence to back this up. This seems to me to be an extremely high paranoia couple who bought a ranch to live unbothered but who can't stop creating drama that breaks that peace. Appears to be. I would urge you to not make up your mind just yet, as I am not, but if the body camera video confirms these reports the Mallerys are not the innocent racially persecuted couple they want us to believe they are.
