Dr Lenny Peters walked to school barefoot in southern India. As an exceptionally bright child, he always knew he was destined for more. His life story is remarkable, as is what he's doing now to help others. Dr. Peters' new book is called "Barefoot to Benefactor". Looking forward to this fascinating conversation.

Avoiding COVID data abuse

Since yesterday's conversation about COVID vaccine mandates, I've gotten a lot of questions from listeners. I've answered quite a few privately but I want to take on one particular thing publicly: Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) who is a friend of mine, is sharing some data from the UK in a way that I think is quite misleading. I won't go through it all here but I'll just pose the thought experiment to you: Since we know that "breakthrough" infections are possible but also that the vaccine seems very effective against severe hospitalization or death, what percent of COVID deaths would you expect among the vaccinated population in a country where 90% of the population is vaccinated?

How far will Manchin cave?

I've always believed that Sen Joe Manchin (D-WV) would agree to spending FAR more than his previous target of "only" $1 trillion to $1.5 trillion...an amount which is already insane and unacceptable given what the government has already spent in the past two years and that they have another so-called "infrastructure bill" of $1.2 trillion ready to pass. Now there are rumors that he might go for $2 trillion. BUT, it seems like he wants a lot of things his way. (See first link below.) We don't know what Sen Sinema will do, and it's disconcerting that our hopes are pinned to someone who was quite a liberal Democrat when in the House although she's been far more independent since getting into the Senate. But here's what you need to watch out for: Democrats will pretend to lower the cost of the bill by simply authorizing new entitlements for shorter periods of time (while still keeping taxes for the entire 10-year budget window) and then assuming that future congresses will keep buying votes by extending these incredibly expensive new handouts like subsidized or free day-care, also called pre-K. To be fair to Manchin, he has said that he will not support new entitlements, so let's hope he stands by that.
