Colin Kaepernick On Potential Workout List For The Los Angeles Chargers

Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick may get a shot at playing football this season. Los Angeles Chargers coach Anthony Lynn told reporters that Kaepernick may end up on team's workout list for the summer and praised his skills.

"He fits the style of quarterback that we want. We're happy with the three quarterbacks that we want, but you can't have enough on the runway," Lynn said.

Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since 2016, after he sparked controversy by kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality. The protest quickly spread around the league and to other sports as players took a knee in solidarity with Kaepernick.

The protests were controversial, with many arguing that kneeling during the national anthem was disrespectful.

After the season, Kaepernick was cut by the San Francisco 49ers. He remained unsigned during the offseason and filed a grievance with the NFL, claiming the owners were colluding to keep him out of the league. In 2017, he reached a financial settlement with the league.

Kaepernick continued to work out, hoping he could find a roster spot on an NFL team. He organized a workout last year, but disagreements with how the workout would be handled led Kaepernick to move it at the last minute. Only a handful of teams attended the workout at the new location, and Kaepernick was not offered a contract.

Four years after Kaepernick took a knee, his message has been brought back into the spotlight after the death of George Floyd. As protests spread around the world, many athletes have vowed to take a knee when games resume.

Lynn previously defended Kaepernick and the protests during an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

"People completely misunderstood Colin and what he was trying to do," Lynn explained." People talked about disrespecting the flag ... the flag covers a lot -- patriotism and civil rights and other things. And Colin was speaking out against the injustice, and a lot of people didn't catch on to that because it was happening during the national anthem. They thought it was disrespectful to the flag. I was surprised by the number of people who didn't know why he was protesting. "
