Thurs Blogcast: Speaker Johnson takes on far right; Motorcycles passing you

Just One Thing: Why is that motorcycle passing me?

Starting later this year, you might see a little change on the highway when you’re stuck in stop-and-go traffic. Thanks to Senate Bill 79, now signed into law by the governor, if two adjacent lanes of traffic are stopped on a highway, motorcycles may pass between them provided that there’s a safe distance between the cars on each side to do so and provided that the motorcycle not exceed 15 MPH. The change is based on studies in Europe and Australia and California that showed very low risk from this “lane filtering”, sometimes called lane splitting and supporters hope the change will reduce traffic congestion. This permission will automatically expire in 3 years if not renewed.

Yesterday, the House released the actual text of the separate foreign aid bills (Israel, Russia, Taiwan: Read: House GOP releases Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan aid bills (axios.com) There will likely be at least one more bill (that might not pass the House and definitely won't pass the Senate that contains conservative priorities such as the border and a TikTok ban.)

And Marjorie Taylor Greene is an idiot of the first order

I understand that many conservative Republicans have a very conservative constituency that they must appeal to. But if Republicans wait any longer to repeal the pre-statehood 1864 law banning all abortions in Arizona except to save the life of the mother, the GOP will get wiped out in the next

This is not like the Hippies or really any other American protest movement that I'm aware of. These people aren't just naive, aren't just wrong. They're evil, they supporter murderers. The only thing I can think of that's close is Hanoi Jane Fonda.

The economics of this are simple: The combination of insane tax policies (federal and state) make legal regulated marijuana too expensive to producer and, at least for some customers, too expensive to buy. Normally, legalizing something would eliminate the space for a black market in that thing, but not when you legalize stupidly: Marijuana tied to Chinese criminal networks infiltrates Maine

I don't love everything about Ron DeSantis but I would so much rather have had him as the GOP nominee than Donald Trump. And I don't know why he was so much worse on the presidential campaign trail than he is as governor when it comes to communicating in a way that sounds mostly rational.

Maybe, but you gotta see what they controlled for. For example, maybe (in fact, probably) people who exercise also have other healthier aspects to their lifestyles, such as drinking less. I have emailed the lead author of the study to ask the question, and he replied with something that makes the study results more likely to be real: "We looked into that. Because we studied a biobank cohort, subjects provided detailed lifestyle data. We also had genetic information, socioeconomic data, and detailed info on other comorbidities. The relationship between physical activity and cardiovascular disease risk reduction remained similar and statistically significant after further adjustment for socioeconomic and lifestyle factors, genetic influences, and major medical comorbidities."
