One student was shot at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, according to Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson. The suspected shooter has been identified as 18-year old Karl Halverson Pierson is believed to have taken his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

One student who happened to be nearby the suspect was shot and is currently in critical condition according to Robinson. Another student, found during a search of the school, had blood on her from the first shooting victim.  She was examined at a local hospital and then released. Pierson appears to have acted alone, without any coconspirators, according to Robinson.

A hospital spokesman has confirmed that one student is in critical condition.

Only one weapon -- a shotgun -- believed to be the gun used in the shooting, was found in the school.

According to Robinson, the shooter intended to target a specific teacher at the school. The teacher left immediately and is unharmed.

The school has been evacuated. A staging area has been set up at Shepherd of the Hills Middle School across Dry Creek Rd. from the high school. Parents are urged to gather there to look for their children and await more information. Students who were direct witnesses to the shooting are being taken to nearby Euclid Middle School.
